In May 1889, in the town of Ceccano in Italy’s Lazio region, Fausta Leo and Giovanni D’Annibale welcomed the birth of their daughter, Settimia D’Annibale—Paul’s maternal grandmother. Giovanni and Fausta had three daughters: Erminia, Settimia, and Giuseppina. While Erminia and Giuseppina remained in Italy, Settimia went on a different path. On December 2, 1920, Settimia and three of her children boarded the S.S. Re D’Italia to emigrate to the United States, joining her husband, Eugene Giancini, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Among the children who made the journey was Beatrice Giancini—Paul’s mother.
