Francesco Gaudenzi, pictured in the bottom right, was Sandra’s paternal grandfather. The Gaudenzi family came from Gualdo Tadino in the Umbria region of Italy. Francesco first arrived in America in June 1908 aboard the Duca degli Abruzzi, joining his sister Giuseppa, who was already living in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Like many immigrants in the region at the time, he found work as a coal miner. Francesco later married Mary Cavagnaro, a local Italian-American whose family had immigrated to the United States years earlier. Together, Francesco and Mary lived in Scranton and raised four children, including Jerome Gaudenzi, Sandra’s father.
