Giovanna Mercanti, Sandra’s maternal grandmother, was born in Coldellanoce. It is a very small town tucked away on a hillside separate from other Sassoferrato neighborhoods nearby. Its population is fewer than 100 people. Iginio Emiliani was from Sassafarrato. He married Giovanna in September 1909. A month after they were married, the couple set sail to America on the S.S. Romanic. Iginio had already been to America to get ready for his bride. They would make their home in Scranton, PA. They had two daughters, Veila and Olga, Sandra’s mother.
